HAMZA / SILENT
A glottal stop from the throat, or a letter that is completely silent in pronunciation.
qul a'ūdhu bi-rabbil falaq · Al-Falaq 113:1
The highlighted أ is a hamza — make a distinct glottal stop, like a brief catch in the throat before the vowel.
MADD — ELONGATION
Prolonging a vowel sound. Natural madd lasts 2 beats; obligatory madd extends to 4–6 beats.
ṣirāṭal-ladhīna an'amta 'alayhim ghayril-maghḍūbi 'alayhim wa lad-dāāllīn · Al-Fātiḥah 1:7
The آ is a madd letter followed by a doubled letter — stretch the "aa" sound for 6 full beats before the ل.
IKHFA — CONCEALMENT
Noon sākin or tanwīn before one of 15 letters — the noon is partially hidden with a nasal hum for 2 beats.
min sharri mā khalaq · Al-Falaq 113:2
The ن before ش is concealed — hum nasally for 2 beats with your tongue not touching the roof of your mouth.
IDGHAM — MERGING
Noon sākin or tanwīn merges into the next letter. With ghunna (ي ن و م): nasal hum 2 beats. Without ghunna (ل ر): instant merge.
fa mayya'mal mithqāla dharratin khayray-yarah · Az-Zalzalah 99:7
The ن before يَ disappears into a nasal ya — sounds like "may-ya'mal", not "man ya'mal".
QALQALA — ECHO
Letters ق ط ب ج د when vowel-less (sākin). A slight bouncing vibration — stronger at the end of a verse where you stop.
was-samā'i wat-tāriq · At-Tāriq 86:1
Stopping on the ق at end of verse — let it bounce slightly after the stop. Never cut it completely flat.
GHUNNA / IQLAB — NASAL
Ghunna: nasal resonance on doubled ن or م for 2 beats. Iqlab: noon sākin before ب converts to a nasal meem sound.
sa'ala sā'im bi'adhābin wāqi' · At-Ma'ārij 70:1
The tanwin ٌ before بِ is an iqlab — the noon sound converts to a nasal "m" hum for 2 beats before the ب.
Stopping Signs
Waqf (وقف) signs appear above words in the Quran to guide you on where to stop, pause, or continue recitation.
WAQF LĀZIM — MUST STOP
م
Stopping here is obligatory. Continuing without pausing would distort the meaning.
WAQF MUṬLAQ — ABSOLUTE STOP
ط
A complete stop is preferred. The sentence or meaning is fully resolved at this point.
WAQF JĀ'IZ — PERMISSIBLE STOP
ج
Stopping is allowed here. Continuing is also fine — both are correct.
WAQF MUJAWWAZ — ALLOWED, CONTINUE BETTER
ز
Stopping is permitted but continuing without a break is slightly preferred.
WAQF MURAKHKHAS — PAUSE WITHOUT BREATH
ص
A brief pause is allowed if short of breath, but do not take a new breath — continue the recitation flow.
WAṢL AWLĀ — CONTINUE IS BETTER
صلى
Continuing without stopping is preferred here, though stopping is not wrong.
LĀ WAQF — DO NOT STOP
لا
Do not stop here — the meaning is incomplete and stopping would cause confusion.
MUʿĀNAQAH — LINKED STOPS
∴ ∴
Appears above two words in the same verse. Stop at one or the other — never both, never neither.
SAJDA — PROSTRATION
۩
Reciting this verse makes prostration (sajdah) recommended. Pause, prostrate, then continue recitation.
RUB EL-HIZB — QUARTER JUZ
۞
Marks a quarter-juz boundary. Used as a reference point for tracking recitation progress through a Juz.
